Display Thumbnail Captions

How do I display captions on thumbnails in galleries using nextgen?
So frustrating that something that should be so simple has taken over an hour of researching online. Anyone know how to do this.
Adding [nggallery id=your-gallery-id template=caption] is not working for me.
