• My site Alva’s Almanac is relatively new, and I am a complete n00b about coding, etc. I’ve been being disheartened because while I know people have been reading my blog, no one has followed it.

Today a new visitor messaged me on Facebook and told me he is unable to “Follow” me on WP using the “Follow +” button he (and I) are familiar with.

I’ve tried to rectify that by:

-Enabling “Anyone can register” in the General Settings (no luck)
-Installing a “Follow” plugin associated with JetPack (no luck)
-Uninstalling the JetPack Follow plugin and JetPack itself (no luck)
-Installing a “Follow” Plugin unassociated with JetPack (no luck)
-Changing my Theme from 2013 to Fashionista (no luck)
-Reading Support Forum Threads and Google for Resolved Issues of the Same Type For Three Hours Now (no luck)

I purchased my domain and installed WordPress through Dreamhost. I’m pretty frustrated at this point. Does anyone have any guidelines or suggestions for me? I would prefer my visitors be able to add me to their readers, obviously.

  • You need to use JetPack for that functionality – if JetPack isn’t working, post on the JetPack forum so they can help you figure out what’s not working –

Also, it looks like you have W3TC plugin – which is a known problem with JetPack –

So you might try deactivating that.

Mistaken Detail. Sorry about that. Somehow thought you meant facebook.
    Thanks WPyogi.

She’s talking about “followers” on WordPress.COM.

Thank you WPyogi! I deactivated W3TC. I’m considering the possibility that it’s because my site is remotely hosted? Would that be consistent?

I reinstalled JetPack because it makes my dashboard more functional, as well as the JP Follow Button. The visitor who told me he couldn’t “follow” me so that my posts come up in his WP Reader is on the WPdotCOM end of WordPress? Well, he “liked” one of my blog posts today and then was given the option to Follow me.

I am a terrible n00b when it comes to infrastructure for my site. My skills are in writing, which is a good thing, except for when I don’t understand minutiae such as this.

I really appreciate your following up on this, and if you have any further guidance I am all ears.

WordPress.com’s follow and Jetpack’s aren’t the same thing. If you’re self-hosted, like you are, you don’t show up on a WPcom’s reader (unless they suddenly changed everything… It’s possible).
