Media library upload not working

Have you checked – using FTP – that the image file is actually being upload to wp-content/uploads?

Yeah it is but it has a few folders before you get to the images wp-content/uploads/2013/11/then the images

That’s fine. Check that anti-hotlinking isn’t enabled in your hosting account. If it is, try disabling it.

apparently by default the anti-hotlinking is disabled. But the .htaccess file cannot be found in the wordpress folder

Are you using custom permalinks on your site?

no default setting

Then you will not have an .htaccess file in your WordPress root folder. Can you post a link to a publically available page that includes one of these missing images?

I have fixed the problem.

I deleted the file system in the ftp so it was just wp-content/uploads and then in the settings in wordpress Settings/Media unticked the ‘organise my uploads ….’

and it now works
