Nope, not logical at all. And for some (like me) preferred. If I refer to one of my old posts, I like the pingback on that old post. Thus, if someone googles into that article, they can see that there’s an update or continuation.

That being said, you can of course, negate the autoping by specifying the link to your old post as relative instead of absolute. For example, if the post is at http://mydomain.com/myblog/month/day/slug just link to it at /myblog/month/day/slug. WP won’t do the pingback on a relative url.

Which is all very well until someone clicks the link in a feed reader.

You do relative urls, as suggested, in your posts to avoid self pingbacks. Then this plugin fixes ’em in your RSS feed.

You have autoping by default. The thread you elected to join is a discussion about REMOVING it.

Using relative urls is way to avoid self-pingbacks. However, relative URLs in your feed don’t go anywhere. And before I write a book, just click that link I provided for more info.
