• WordPress.com has a Manage/Export menu item which very nicely produces an XML output file. No problem.

My brand new 2.0.4 WordPress installation does not have a matching Manage/Import menu item. So how to import that XML file?

There is a top level Import menu item, but that only imports from eveyone else’s software, not WordPress XML. Stuck.

    Any help much appreciated.

There is a wordpress to wordpress plug-in that worked fine for me anyway.

If you mean: did I read about using RSS, the answer is yes, thanks. What I got was: you can do it with RSS but you’re going to get various problems, some of which can be solved if you persist and do some other stuff.

I really would like to get an answer to my question: is there a way to import the XML file that WordPress.com now so cheerfully produces?

If not, I guess I’ll go and do the RSS thing. It’s definitely not my preferred option.

no, I asked you if you tried the last option on the IMPORT page.

The last time I checked, RSS feeds WERE xml.

Maybe you know otherwise but I dont think so.

    Import RSS

    1. Importing post…Done !
    2. Importing post…Done !

    All done. Have fun!

    Worked for me just fine.

you can thank me later after youve re-thought your last reply. ??

… and Hjorthen gave the WP importer plugin link (which will be built-in version 2.1’ish). As I recall, that one handles comments as well as posts.

The RSS importer didn’t work for me, but the XML-plugin did. Comments and posts with no problem whatsoever.

The only little glitch is that any pictures you have uploaded to wp.com gets imported as posts as well.

OK, so, I’ve tried all these ideas, but all I get is this error message:
“Sorry, there has been an error.
Unable to create directory /home/jonppip1/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2006/08. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”
    So what’s that all about?

Well jonp… is the directory writable by the server?

    Hi,

I have the same problem as jonp, and getting the same error message:

“Unable to create directory … public_html/wp-content/uploads/2006/08. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

To make the parent directory (which I assume is either Uploads or wp-content) writable by the server, is that something I do via WordPress or rather directly with the software/service hosting my webspace?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Hello,

We are obviously all having similar problem. I have just moved my blog and I want to import the posts and the rest of the things but all I receive as a message is “Unable to create directory /www/vavalu.net/www/root/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

Have anyone found a solution what shoul be done in this case? Should I contact my hosting provider or can I do something myself?

Just did a clean install into a new database of WP 2.2 and the WordPress import function is not working. It uploads the xml file (which then appears in the uploads area) – but step 1 is a blank page – no error messages, no further instructions, nothing. – Just a blank body area.

I contacted my hosting provider and asked about the message “Unable to create directory /www/vavalu.net/www/root/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?” which I was getting. They fixed something and I managed to import my posts with no further problems.

So try contacing your hosting provider – this worked with me.

Has the problem about the blank page been resolved?
Im also on a clean install of wp 2.2 and when importing a xml file generate by wordpress.com im getting a blank page. Im not getting any “Unable to create directory…” errors. Folder permissions for upload seem to be right (777). Any one have any ideas?

I was actually doing some more tests with my other hosting provider and the import of the same file worked fine there. So this concludes that there must be a problem with how my current host is setup. Does anyone know what is requred on the server side for import to work? Any particular modules, size restrictions? options to be turned on when compiling php maybe?

    Thank you
