• Hi there, I am installing wordpress on to a domain that already has a site running in html.

I have set up the subfolder in the public_html folder and have then gone to set up an additional mysql database for the install. The site only has one database in their hosting package which is used by the existing html site.

Am I right in thinking that I will need them to upgrade their hosting package to allow for more than one database in order for me to complete the install and to build their new site with the old one running at the same time?

    Thanks

    Mark

  • No. WordPress prefixes all its tables so that it can share a database with other applications. You get to choose the prefix, in case the default wp_ might cause a conflict.

Thanks Rob – so just to check I understand – I can use the existing database that the site is using while I am building the new wordpress website in a sub folder (so both sites are running at the same time) and it wont have any impact on the running of the existing site?

I can therefore just go forward with the wordpress install to the subfolder I have set up (called new site)?

    Thanks for your help,

Yes, WordPress will add its own tables to the existing database. Another application can use its tables in the same database at the same time.
