Better WP Security banned me from my own site for half a day – WHY?
-
Recently, my colleague and I (working from different cities) were unable to access our WordPress website (which uses Better WP Security).
For the best part of one afternoon, we kept getting a message saying Error (black writing on a white background). Then, the site would connect for a couple of minutes before returning to the error message again. At the time, I assumed the server running the website was having problems – but the host insisted that everything was running OK.
Reading through these forums, I now realise that Better WP Security was at least partly to blame for this experience. When I looked through the logs for that day I saw that alternately my IP address and my colleagues had been temporarily banned for 15 mins at a time because of bad login attempts. That was why we were getting the error messages from Better WP Security and that was why we kept getting locked out for 15 mins at a time.
My question is: How could this have happened when my colleague and I were both using the correct login details?
Also, I have now Whitelisted our two IP addresses. But is there anything else I can do to stop this happening again?
