posts per page question

forgive me if this question has been answered already, but my searching didnt yield the results i was looking for…

i’m using wordpress as a cms for my design portfolio site, and i want the main index page to display the last 5 posts in all categories, but when you select the category from the navigation, it shows every post in that category on the same page.

is this a possibilty?
