Untitled theme index page is missing

Two weeks ago I downloaded the “Untitled” created a multi page website/blog and everything functioned. The theme page with a bleeding banner photo was there. All without the need for JetPack. I’m using WP dot com, not org (can’t figure out how to access my server, etc for dot org)
As soon as I published a post, the blog page, about, gallery and everything functioned, but the theme or index page never appeared. It doesn’t even show in the dashboard under pages. I even tried selecting a new theme, then going back to “Untitled” as a new theme and all that did was erase my widgets.
How do I get it back?
