changing themes

I have a couple questions. I just built my first website using the Blackbird theme and now want to take it farther. I would like to make the front page more interactive, possibly with daily updates, related stories, and news. I am probably thinking just a blog type theme but am unsure. First, can I easily change themes or do I have to start over? and second, any suggestions? Thanks for any input.
