How to remove "Powered By: WordPress" from footer

No, do NOT modify theme files – those changes will be lost when the theme is updated. That kind of change should be made only in a Child Theme – and for specific help, please post on the theme’s forum:

The theme I am using is just a free them by WordPress will I violate if I edit the footer to remove the “Powered By: WordPress”?

You can edit your theme anyway that you like but if you do edit the original file then you will lose your changes when a theme update comes out. That’s why it’s always recommended to create a child theme, activate that child theme and edit a copy of the footer.phpfile in the child theme directory.
