Description field for Quick Edit view in Media Library Assistant?

I’m happy to hear you’re finding the plugin to be useful and enjoyable; thanks.

Wherever possible I have tried to emulate standard WordPress functions, and the Quick Edit feature follows this principle. For posts and pages, the Quick Edit function does not include a provision to edit the post/page content. In part, I believe, this is because the post/page content uses the Visual Editor and provides a toolbar with buttons for formatting text, adding links and so forth. Screen space is also a concern.

The MLA Quick Edit feature follows the WordPress precedent and does not include the Description field (which is the “content” of the Media Item). There is no way to add this field to the Quick edit area in the current version.

I will consider adding the Description field to the Quick Edit area in a future release. Thank you for your interest and for asking about it.

Ok, I understand now why that field isn’t currently included in the Quick Edit feature. Thanks for the response!

I have released version 1.51, which adds the Description field to the Quick Edit area as a small textarea control. This should be sufficient for simple edits of the field; if you need the full WYSIWYG editor you can always use the Edit Media screen.

Thank you the great plugin. It has helped me organize my media library.

However I have a problem searching my images when I’m on the “Insert Media” popup when creating a new post. I can only search by title, name, ALT text, caption, description not by tags.

This works when you have a few images but I bulk edit lots of images (10000+) and can only add tags which aren’t searchable from the “Insert Media” popup.

Would there be a way to bulk edit caption, description with your plugin? And do you have a suggestion how one could search for tags in the “Insert Media” popup?

Thanks for the kind words and for your question.

I’m on the road and working from memory, so bear with me. First, with regard to tags, I have had a number of requests for enhancing the Media Manager Modal Window (insert media). I’m working through what to do in this area. In the current MLA version you can select the taxonomy for the “filter by” dropdown in the Media Manager toolbar; maybe that will help. Go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab and scroll down to Taxonomy Support. Check the box for tags (or Att. Tags or whatever) and also the radio button in the Filter column. That taxonomy will fill the dropdown and you can filter on that.

Second, bulk editing of caption and description isn’t included because copying an identical value for the caption of many items doesn’t seem of much use. What kinds of content are you thinking about for these fields?

Although bulk edit isn’t available, you can use the IPTC/EXIF mapping features to load these fields from a variety of sources. Go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant IPTC/EXIF tab and have a look. In fact, with the Content Template facility you can compose caption and description values from a wide range of sources, not just IPTC/EXIF values. You can use literals, custom fields, taxonomy terms, etc. by entering a template in the “EXIF” text box. That might be a good substitute for your application.

thank you for the detailed answer. I’m sorry about the double post. Wasn’t sure which one was the right one.

I guess the main issue we face is in the Media Manager Modal Window. Not being able to search for tags creates a big problem. We will literally have 10’s of thousands of pictures and even filtering it down will not really help that much. So the only solution is to search for the images. But you can’t search for tags but for descriptions and captions.

So my thought would be to bulk edit the description and caption (because we have lets say 10 images that have the same description/caption) so one could search for them in the Media Manager Modal Window. Or if there is a way to implement a search for tags in the Modal window.

The IPTC/EXIF mapping sounds interesting and I’ve looked at it. Am I right in the assumption one would need to bulk edit the IPTC/EXIF data offline so it would map when uploading them? Or is there a way to map the tags one bulk edits in MLA to the description and caption?

If you have some idea how to solve this problem I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you so much for your help.
