• I currently have an installation of WordPress on my root domain:

    example.com/post-name

I’m wanting to install WordPress again in a subdirectory, but still maintain a URL structure I can stick with (I’m wanting to do this because I’m transitioning on a page-by-page basis).

If I install WordPress in a subfolder, I’ll have:

    example.com/subdirectory/category/post-name

but I want it to be

example.com/category/post-name and still have example.com/post-name exist.

    Is this possible?

  • You need to setup a subdomain through your hosting control panel then install WP to the subdomain. The subdomain may physically appear as a folder in your root (depending on your host) but will be accessible via example.com ??

Hey Keith, thanks a bunch for the response.

    Bear with me…

So what you’re saying is if I install it on a subdomain, I would have:

    example.com/post-name (original installation)
    example.com/category/post-name (installed on the subdomain)

    is that right?

Wouldn’t the second example above be subdomain.example.com/category/post-name or subdomain.example.com/post-name ?

Sorry, now I understand what you are trying to do. You cannot have WP installed in the exact same location twice. If you want the exact URL structure you would need a second domain to work with.

Why not just export everything, setup a fresh WP and import?

Yeah I was wanting to install it in a subdirectory and strip out the subdirectory part of the URL.

I’m dealing with SEO issues so not wanting to redirect or simply re-import, I want to move pages one-by-one and rebuild the site (gradually) with the new URL structure.

It just looks better as example.com/category/post than example.com/subdirectory/category/post because of the situation I’m in, otherwise I would just set up an entirely new install on /subdirectory and then point the site to that :-/

So you must have WP installed in a subdirectory already? If that is the case you can install a fresh copy in the root and proceed from there ??

Be sure to set the permalink structure to /%category%/%postname%/ in the new install.

Yeah that’s the issue, it’s already installed in the root and the subdirectory spits out links like:

    example.com/subdirectory/category/post

and I want them just as:

example.com/category/post (but on the subdirectory install)

I know it seems like a crazy setup.

Check your WordPress and Site URL under general -> settings. Is anything being added to the URL in there? I’m trying to figure out where this extra sub-directory portion of the URL is coming from ??

Yeah, it’s showing example.com/subdirectory – however, if I simply remove that it messes everything up.
