Excesse DB use with Zotpress

So, I’ve turned on logging on my database, and I am seeing that, for a single request containing a bibliography with many items, Zotpress makes about 600 database requests. Of these about 400 are UPDATEs, and 200 are SELECTs.

Is this how it’s supposed to work as well on the live site?
Am I missing a setting?
