    Upgrading from 3.5.2 to 3.6 I have an issue and the blog is not functioning at all.
    I am getting this error:
    “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”
    The installation of 3.6 obviously was not successful however how do I get out of this problem without having to re-install? Is there any way.

    Please help as we have a website down as a result.

    Seems that the Database update failed.
    After trying to update the database this is what we have –

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 13897 bytes) in /home/mgt18575/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/update.php on line 201

    Please help

    It sounds like you don’t have enough memory for PHP to execute the update. To increase memory allocated to PHP see: Increasing Memory Allocated to PHP.

    I don’t know what this means for your install… can you link to the site to see what kind of error is coming up?

    I changed topic because the error I am getting now is different. I did not see your reply beforehand.
    I am getting a different error now because I tried updating the database and it told me it updated correctly. The site is now functioning at the front end but the Dashboard admin has a number of issues.

    I tried the automatic WP install but I am now getting this error:

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 195620 bytes) in /home/mgt18575/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 640

    I do not have access to php.ini to change the memory limit. I tried to change the memory limit on .htaccess and the whole website went bad, so I put that back.

    I have added a line in wp-config.php to change the memory limit to 128M but it did not make a difference.

    You may have to contact your host regarding the PHP memory limit.

    What kind of issues are you having in the Dashboard admin area?

    When you say you tried updating the database and it updated, where exactly in the admin area are you doing this? In the WordPress updater? That part isn’t clear to me.

    The issues I am having in the Dashboard are that when as much as trying to list All posts, or pages, or edit a page or post I am faced with a blank page. No errors, it just displays a blank page.

    The database update was done from within WordPress. When the first installation failed I hit the back button and WordPress came up with a screen saying that the Database had not finished updating and gave me a button to hit to do the Update. I hit that button and then it came back saying it completed successfully.

    But obviously I am still having issues. I can get to the update core page but when I try re-install I get the fatal error I have given above.

    This is the first time I am having this kind of issue and I have automatically updated WP before without issues. The website is:

    No problem. I had a very similar install issue on godaddy.

    Thanks for clarifying. Sounds like the update didn’t finish completely. Luckily your site is still functional.

    Check with your host and see if they can help you with that PHP memory limit. And make sure everything is backed up of course before trying to update again.

    Looks like I have been able to restore my site from the backup, and then do the update again which worked this time without having to play with memory limits.

    I suspect my original problem was because of a plugin which I did not de-activate before the automatic update.

    That’s why I am using WordPress. It is a wonderful platform to use.

    All better now, everything is functioning as it should.

    Thank goodness for backups right?

    This might come in useful for someone-
    Seeing as didnt update my WordPress version automatically, i decided to check out my plugins and started with the “Prime Suspect”- JETPACK.
    Deactivating Jetpack helped get rid of this message and made it possible to work on my posts

    Open up your website files using Ftp or file manager, rename your plugins folder to something other then ‘plugins’ which which will automatically deactivate your plugins and allow you to gain access to your website. Update your website again and AFTER doing so rename your plugins folder back to “plugins” which will reactivate your plugins
