Activate Button for Tiled Galleries in Jetpack missing

    Hello!

    I can’t seem to figure out how to get the Tiled Galleries to work in Jetpack. Here’s what happened:

    I’ve been testing a new theme on a local install of WordPress (using MAMP) and I realized that the tiled galleries post in the Theme Unit Test data isn’t working. I went to the Jetpack Tiled Gallery option in the Jetpack plugin and notice that there is no “activate” button only “learn more”. I think perhaps there isn’t one? I go to Media > Settings and there isn’t the “display as cool mosaic” option to select. I go back and activate Carousel, thinking it might be related, nothing.

    I remove all the themes except twentythirteen from my themes folder, doesn’t help. I deactivate all plugins except Jetpack, doesn’t help. I downloaded a new version of 3.6 and replace all the core files, doesn’t help. I delete and reactivate Jetpack, doesn’t help.

    I’m wondering if it’s an issue with me being on a localhost install instead of web. So I go to my blog: chickadeedesignery.com and see if it’s showing up there (on 3.6 with updated Jetpack) and the activate button shows up there. So it’s just my local install.

    Is there something that I’m doing wrong? Does the tiled galleries not work on local installs? Can I not have a local install and my blog both linked to the same account? Am I missing something obvious? Any help would be appreciated.

    PS: Here’s the Jetpack code copied from what my browser(Chrome) is seeing, looks like the activate button doesn’t even appear:

    I’ve been testing a new theme on a local install of WordPress

    When you’re working in a local environment, your site is not publicly accessible and you cannot connect your site to WordPress.com.
    However, you can still use those Jetpack features that do not require a WordPress.com connection, thanks to the Development mode. You can read more about it here:

    Tiled Galleries do require a WordPress.com connection though, so I’m afraid you won’t be able to use them until your site is live.

    I hope this clarifies things a bit.

    That helps out a lot. I assumed that was the case when I went through all the other steps and nothing worked. Glad to know that I’m not crazy.

    I have the same issue. This is what i have done:
    1) localhost WP and Jetpack Installed
    2) I went to WP.com for Jetpack registration, and got the client ID and client secret. (but i just fill in an invalid URL into the Redirect URL, in order to proceed on with it)
    3) I fill in the ID into my localhost Jetpack Plugins (setting>>general)

    But i still can’t get all the rest of the feature to turn on. My guess is that WordPress.com need to do a return authentication to my Jetpack, and since the URL is not the actual one, the JEtpack was not able to be authorized properly.

    Am i right on the guessing?

    @bss79 As I mentioned in my post above, when you’re working in a local environment, your site is not publicly accessible and you cannot connect your site to WordPress.com. You cannot work around this limitation. Tiled Galleries do require a WordPress.com connection, so I’m afraid you won’t be able to use them until your site is live.

    Hi everyone. I’m trying really hard to migrate my website but need to download jetpack first, and I don’t have the easy access plugin option on my wordpress. Does that mean I should switch themes, would that be my answer? Because I have manually downloaded the jetpack but it’s all code. I have no idea what to do with it once I get all the files, there is no automatic installer like most downloads.

    Hi kirrams,

    I’m not sure what you mean by “easy access plugin option” but to install Jetpack, you need to have access to the plugins tab in the admin area. You have two ways you can install it:

    1. Go to Plugins in the Menu and click the “Add New” button, search for Jetpack and click “Install now” button.
    2. Download it from https://jetpack.me/ Go to the Plugins in your website menu, click the “Add New” button, select Upload from that secondary menu at the top that appears, then upload the zipped file that you downloaded from the jetpack website.

    If you don’t have permissions to upload plugins (you won’t see plugins in the admin menu), you won’t be able to install Jetpack. You will have to ask your administrator to upload and configure it for you.

    Thanks for explaining. It’s frustrating how invisible this requirement is. On my local dev, I can activate Tiled Galleries but it does absolutely nothing of course. Took finding this thread to appreciate why.

    Tiled Galleries can actually be used in a local environment now. If your local installation runs Jetpack 3.0+, you’ll be able to use Tiled Galleries.

    We’ve made that change back in May, when we released Jetpack 3.0.

    Oh thanks! Turns out my instance was affected by a conflict with the [gallery] shortcode which is a separate issue.
