Unable to upload media using wordpress

General rule of thumb: Folders set to 755 or 750. Files set to 644 or 640. Important files (wp-config.php) should have more strict permissions like 600.

This could help: File Permissions & Size Check plugin which should give you an indication if there are any permission issues.

I’ve installed and activated the plugin. I know this is stupid but how do I run it to check for problems? I’m new and naive to all this haha

After activation go to settings – filechecker – run filechecker.

Please make sure to backup etc before doing anything (better safe than sorry)

Ok thanks that’s done. It’s a useful plugin clearly but doesn’t really help my situation. I can’t upload media even if the uploads folder is set to 777.

Interestingly, since connecting to my server again, all the folders have a question mark on them. I reckon that’s a symptom of the problem. any ideas?

usually question marks are on folders not yet loaded/cached.

If this permission persists I would contact your webhost and have them check it out for you.

Seems NearlyFreeSpeech.net and WordPress have some misunderstandings.
