Resize slider to two columns

Is there any way to reduce the size(width) of the the slider to two columns and move the widget area up so it is aligned with the slider? I love this theme. It has everything I want. However I can’t seem to make this change. You can see my site as it is now: https://livingwellwithepilepsy.com

I would like it to look more like https://theatlantic.com (not that I am comparing my writing to theirs by any stretch of the imagination!).
