Error code: 500 When Updating Parent Theme

  • I just inherited this blog from someone else and unfortunately have no way to contact them. The theme was updated directly as opposed to using a child theme. So, I just created a copy of the parent theme folder, renamed it “hybrid-child” added the style.css header Theme Name and Template Name.

    Now when I try to update to Hybrid 0.3 to 1.2 I get a the following error on my admin page:
    Server Error
    The website encountered an error while retrieving https://50.87.191.241/blog/wp-admin/update-core.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Error code: 500

    and the following error when visiting the site:
    Server Error
    The website encountered an error while retrieving https://50.87.191.241/blog/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Error code: 500

    Should I not have copied all of the parent files? When I just used the stylesheet in the child-theme many elements on the page where broken.

    So it looks like I may not get any help on this issue and I need to resolve it soon so I’m coming up with plan-b.

    I think there are some files in the child theme folder that are conflicting with the update. I would now like to download Hybrid version 0.3.3 and compare all of the files in my child theme with the original files. The only problem is that I cannot find a version of 0.3.3 anywhere? Can anybody point me to this old version or have it locally by chance?

    No, copying the functions.php file usually crashes a site :/ .

    So moving changes to a child theme would be the best solution. Old versions are here:

    Thank you! This is quite helpful.

    It seems whoever created the site modified the functions.php file and many others. They also reorganized the directory structure a bit. Looks like I have my work cut out for me.

    Oh ugh, well, just be sure to make a good full backup before you start and keep working copies of your files as you go alone…that usually gives you a good fall back.
