Drop Down Catagory Sort

I have a drop down menu on my page for my catagories and can not figure out how to sort the entries and make them alphabetical. I have tried

<?php dropdown_cats(optionall, ‘all’, ‘sort_column’,’sort_order’, optiondates, optioncount,
hide_empty, optionnone, selected, hide); ?>

but it messes up my entire page. Please help! The catagories menu is getting very confussing for my readers.
