• I think I have uncovered a bug, either with the wordpress core or the role editor plugin. I noticed that on a few pages the author was unable to use the visual editor and the admin page didn’t fully load in as no footer would appear. He could not click on either the visual or html views but could only see white html in the editor. I searched high and low for the cause of this and noticed that when I gave him the “manage_options” capability the visual editor and admin pages returned to full functionality on that page. As soon as it was revoked it returned to the prior unusable state. The odd thing is that the visual editor works just fine with or without that capability on another page he is the author of. For the time being my solution is to grant him this capability but I would prefer not to have to allow him to be able to manage options just to use the visual editor. I have not been able to get any further with uncovering the source and am hopeful that collective insight can help uncover it.

Do you have some active plugin which enhance, added features to the Visual Editor? If Yes, try to deactivate it temporally (or better deactivate all plugins) and check the issue. If it will go away, try to activate plugins one by one to isolate the reason.

I am not using any kind of enhancement for the visual editor. I have tried disabling one at a time and as best I can tell the only thing that has corrected it was enabling the manage_options capability for the users in question. The visual editor will work for admins so I created a test contributor account and granted all privileges and then took them away one by one until it ceased to work again which is how I isolated it to that capability. I just haven’t been able to find the relationship between that and the visual editor and I don’t understand how one is seemingly affecting the other.
