I tried the plugins but they are not what I am looking for (or maybe I am using them wrong). I want to create templates like the ones for pages (full width, sidebar left, sidebar right). My fault for not stating that clearly in my initial post. I read the instructions from the link but it did not have what I am looking for. Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Ah, now I understand. You are talking about page templates. There are plugins that can help with that as well, impact for example. I hope that’s more helpful!
