• Local install runs ok but no theme is visible after activation.
Wpress says theme is installed at bottom of page but none are visible. Some themes just colourise the page, some seem to install part of the theme – eg Snaps theme By Graph Paper Press will install the black & white segment but not the bottom colour segment. But most just are not visible at all. I have reinstalled wordpress through Web Platform Installer on my local machine. Path for wordpress is C:/users/My Dell/My Documents/My Web Sites/wordpress. Themes appear to be installing correctly into wp-content/themes. I can see the themes in their individual folders. Just can’t see them after activating on the test site. Need to get familiar with wordpress before setting up some real sites – or go back to Drupal. Have looked EVERYWHERE for a solution!

  • If you are working in localhost, just try downloading the themes, unzipping them, and dropping them into the themes folder yourself, bypassing WP’s theme installer. There may be issues with your installation that is preventing this from working properly.

If that’s not it, try disabling plugins to rule out a plugin issue. After that, make sure folder permissions are correct for your themes folder/s. If neither of those are an issue, try installing WordPress by hand, using the method I outlined for themes.

It helps to tell us what you have tried (or at least where you have looked) so we don’t recommend something you have already tried.

I have been unzipping into the themes folder and then activating them through word press. Is there an alternative way?
    I have no plugins installed.
Have looked at all wordpress support issues which seemed to suggest similiar problems but were more about problems uploading themes to a site.
Read about one person who seemed to say that themes would not be visible on a local installation only on an actual site which does not seem to make any sense. I presume many have intalled wp to a local machine to trial themes and start a local website. Have checked all permissions on folders. I did attempt initially to install wp manually but ran into conflicts with mysql and php installed through acquia-drupal so used Web Platform Installer. If nobody can offer insight into this problem I may have to attempt a manual install again.

That doesn’t make sense to me, either, unless they meant that your online themes wouldn’t be visible locally.

Yes, I have three different local WordPress installations running. I am using EasyPHP (https://www.easyphp.org/) and have never had any problems with it that weren’t of my own creation. (Lots of those, actually, but it continuously backs up config files, so they are easy fixes.) But I did bypass their built-in WordPress installer and installed it manually.

You can also try Instant WordPress:

I have installed a few more themes and have discovered a few that seem to work – such as “Customizr” , “Aapna” seems to show the header image but not the left hand side image. “Snapshot” displays the top image only. In fact many themes just display the top image/part only. Now I’m really confused.

Thank you Seamus I have downloaded instant WP and your PDF. The PDF downloaded before the WP finished downloading. I shall install and try it. Let you know if it solves this theme problem.

Yes the new instant WP install has thmes working properly. It asks me to install a new version of WP (3.5.1). Is this worth doing? It says compatibility is unknown with this 2.5.6 version of instant WP. What is the difference between instant WP and the ‘regular’ version?
Still doesn’t resolve my earlier problem but now I can get on with some websites.
