calendar refuses to render on page

-in admin mode, button to add calender never appears anywhere
-using shortcode in page, calendar starts load, spider graphic visible, progress bar goes to 99%, then page remains white. The 600x5xx calendar area is an active Flash object, right clicking in there pops up all the normal flash menus, etc. Chrome and Firefox on Linux, Safari on OSX 10.8.x tested all same result
