What is the easiest way to get text overlaid on a "background" image?

I’m converting a flash site over to wordpress for obvious reasons and they wanted me to try to keep as close as possible on the design. I know its possible using a stylesheet but I don’t really know how to write css. Does anyone have some suggestions for basically having a background image with a little table in the middle for text?
