• Hi,

I’ve got a client who currently has a non-WP site with her domain (hername.com) pointed at it. She also has a few other domains (her-name.com, etc) that forward to her main domain.

She wants me to build a new WP site, and leave her current non-WP up until the switch.

I’m thinking I will borrow one of the other domains (her-name.com), install WP there with the new hosting, and then build the site out of the way of her current one. When it’s ready, I should be able to just change the domain hername.com to point at her-name.com, correct?

Is there something that could make this go poorly? I’m not sure if I’m badly over-thinking this, or if I should choose a better way in the first place…

Or, if I start building it on hername.com, is there a way I could see the site without changing her domain from her current non-WP site? I’m using GoDaddy as the host.

Try installing WordPress in a sub-folder on her domain, then see Giving WordPress Its Own Directory when you are ready to launch the new site.

I’m not sure if I understand.

I regularly install WP into a sub-folder when building a new site next to the current one, however the current site at hername.com is a Virb site.

How could I login to the WP backend and/or see the results of changes on the front end if hername.com is still pointed to Virb?

I have no idea what “Virb” is. Can you elaborate on why this would create an issue?

Sorry. Virb.com offers packaged proprietary sites similar in functionality to WP, but they host it themselves and do not allow access to the server. At the moment, hername.com is pointed to hername.virb.com.

GoDaddy just recommended on the phone that I install WP and just use their .previewDNS.com feature to view develop the site before changing the domain away from Virb as the last step. Looks like I will be heading that direction. Thanks for the help.

That sounds like a plan. Or use temp domain name until you’re ready to move the main domain name to the new site.
