Order Item meta isn't added when manually entering orders

I have a store with one variable product, each variation just has one attribute size: 2oz|6oz|8oz|12oz.
When someone makes a normal order through the site, each order item has meta added to it with the size value (e.g. Size|2oz).
When I enter a manual order this meta value isn’t added to the order item, even though it says (2oz) below the product name in the order listing.
Is there a way to have this meta value automatically added when entering manual orders? It’s not a big deal for me to add the meta, but for other users of the site who aren’t technical, it’s a burden.
The main reason I need this meta is it’s used in the Print Invoices & Delivery Notes extension, but also just because I should be able to input an order manually and have it have the same info as a natural order.
