I’ll admit it – I screwed up. I network-activated W3TC and my entire network went down with a 500 server error. I had to delete the plugin and edit .htaccess to get the network back up.

Now I know not to do that. So I downloaded and installed W3TC again, did NOT network activate it, and went to one of the blogs to activate it. Unfortunately, it isn’t showing up in the list of plugins I can activate!

I’m sure this problem is just some leftover from my initial clumsy attempt to fix the first problem I caused. Any suggestions?

Just FYI, since I was forced to delete the plugin without deactivating, I tried two additional things that didn’t work:

    1. I used the network plugin area to delete and reinstall W3TC to make sure it was completely uninstalled and completely reinstalled.
    2. I network-activated and QUICKLY network-deactivated W3TC to make sure that there weren’t any lingering database issues.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you checking in the network admin area? Policies are managed there unless you specifically disable network-wide settings management.

Wait – so I AM supposed to activate it at the network level? All the support threads said that that was not the correct way to do it. They must have been old!

    Yes, they’re old.

Thank you so much for your stellar support. Just to be clear, in a multisite situation, the plugin SHOULD be activated and configured at the network level, yes?

Is there documentation on this that I overlooked? Thanks!

Yes. You haven’t overlooked any documentation. The note about the change is only in the changelog.

Thanks! I should have looked a little closer. You rock!
