    Ok, the version I checked is a rough guess as I haven’t had this blog up for a quite a few years now. I had it as a regular blog at one stage then bought a domain and transferred it all over to it.

    I believe the blog was originally created through the .com site and then I got the domain and changed it over to the .org one? I have no idea… been too long!

    Anyway, situation is this. I have a backed up file (from 2011) but it’s only the back up. I have no export files. I am trying to resurrect the blog (not the domain) part of it. I do have the WordPress folder.

    Please someone tell me I can get this blog back up and running?
    The original .com site is still up but the only blog post on it is that I have a new domain and to click on the link (which now doesn’t exist anymore).

    I was told at the .com forum that there might be some genius here who can guide me to installing the old versions of wordpress and then just updating several times to the current version.

    I may be talking in circles and I hope I’m not.
    I also currently have a domain name that is sitting idle. What are the chances of it working if I upload the backed up wordpress folder to my domain and then doing the updates? Will I get all my posts back?

    Phew!

    Ok….. your turn. Confuse me more! ??
    Cheers!

  • Do you have WordPress installed locally on your computer? If so start by importing the database into the newly setup installation. If anything goes wrong you can always make corrections/ redo (keep copies safely).

    BTW, you may get it right on the first trial itself, provided the versions of various software do not conflict. So, to be on the safer side, you may use a test site if you do not do the work on a local install.

    I don’t have a local install.

    All I really have is a domain name with no files in it. It’s empty.
    And the backed up wordpress folder.

    I can upload the old WordPress folder to it and then attempt to update it? This was my plan. Just need to know if it’ll work or not?

    Ok……

    Files are uploaded to the domain.

    I just need to point my link to my current wordpress folder and when I do I get

    Error establishing database connection

    What does this mean?

    Editing again to add: That I can log into my wordpress.com account and I can see…
    Flight Jitters and
    Dees Travel Journal

    Flight Jitters is the blog I started out as and then changed it to the latter which points to a domain. Is there any way to change that blog so it doesn’t point to a domain but will can bring me to the wordpress dashboard?

    First you may check if you have set the wp-config.php file with the correct database name, database username, database password and MySQL hostname. That should help ‘Error establishing database connection’ go away. Once that is done, you can change your old site names, old URL, etc.

    I went in and created a database on my hosting account. But it’s different to what the wp-config file looks for. I’m through GoDaddy.

    My current config file asks for
    db name (name_blog)
    db username (name_username)
    db password (password)

    whereas my godaddy has the name and usename as one
    db name and username (deestravels)
    db password (password)

    I changed the config file to match the godaddy one but it’s still not able to establish a connection.

    What do you have as host name? It’s not localhost in GoDaddy, as they load database from another server.

    (@aussiedee77)

    Not sure what you mean by host name?

    Look at your wp-config.php file.

    (@aussiedee77)

    This is what it says on Godaddy

    Database name and username: deestravels

    Password:<hidden>

    Friendly Name: WPBlog

    Admin URL (phpMyAdmin):
    https://sg2nlsmysqladm1.secureserver.net/grid50/329 Visit

    MySQL version:
    5.0 (Direct access not allowed)

    Status: Setup

    Hostname:
    deestravels.db.11012797.hostedresource.com

    My config file on my wordpress file is OLD…. I changed it to what I set up in Godaddy.

    The config file used to say this…
    <?php
    // ** MySQL settings ** //
    define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘deestrav_blog’); // The name of the database
    define(‘DB_USER’, ‘deestrav_dee’); // Your MySQL username
    define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘hidden’); // …and password
    define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’); // 99% chance you won’t need to change this value
    define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
    define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);

    define('DB_HOST', 'localhost'); // 99% chance you won't need to change this value

    You need to change the localhost name in GoDaddy.

    EDIT: replace 'localhost' with 'deestravels.db.11012797.hostedresource.com

    Ok, that’s done….. and I was able to launch wordpress through my site however, I need the old posts to show up…. the .sql file from the old blog with all my posts on it. All the old wordpress files and folders are uploaded already. The config file is changed. But it’s all showing as if the blog is brand new.

    Happy with result? Find problems? Now can you post your URL so that I can have a look at it?

    (@aussiedee77)

    I need to move my .sql file from my old blog to this one, am I correct? Where would I upload that to in GoDaddy?

    I’m sure I can probably find out.

    My website is donnarondeau.com/wordpress

    OK. That’s fine.
    Now you need to restore your old database. Before doing that keep a copy of that safely. I hope you can restore it.
