Add childtheme creation to the standard WP installation

    I have noticed that may new WP-users are unaware of the virtues of childthemes, when they start to adapt their site to meet their needs.

    A large number of new users find it difficult / cumbersome to create one.

    Much time is taken up in forums to explain ‘why-and-how’ to install and use a childtheme. More time is spent explaining ‘how to fix things’ after a mishap.

    I feel it would be an improvement if WP would ‘by default’ include a simple and hassle-free option to create a childtheme. This should be ‘brought to the attention’ of the user when a new theme is installed or another theme activated.

    There is a ‘one click plugin’ to create a Child Theme. Creating the Child Theme this way only provides the functionality of a Custom CSS plugin. A Child Theme is created in the dashboard, with only a style.css file. It does not allow the copying of other files into the Child Theme.

    So, I think by introducing the option to create a Child Theme through the dashboard, like the mentioned plugin, users will be limited to modifications through a style.css file. Maybe this functionality can be introduced; to allow users to copy files from their parent theme into their Child Theme.

    I think users will still need to create a Child Theme through FTP and understand what they’re doing and why they’re doing it for them to benefit properly from the Child Theme.

    Hi Andrew,

    It’s always nice if people understand what they are doing, I agree.
    However, even if they don’t, it is helpful to get at least the basics sorted. A bit like using seatbelts: they don’t stop you from being a bad driver, or from having accidents; they do limit the damage ‘in the event of…’

    BTW when using the ‘one click childtheme’, should you want to edit php-files, simply copy the files from the original theme into the childtheme folder, and edit as required [you probably knew that anyway..].

    So what I want is give a simple access to a basic requirement.
    Hence my request to include this feature in such a way that it is ‘less likely to be overlooked’.
