This sounds interesting but has to be handled by the theme on the front-end first. Then there can be a template for the editor to enter data in the proper places/tags. At present tables are the only way to do something like this that would work for all themes.

    Let’s start with tables.
Click a grid icon and a selection box popup showing options for grids.

Similar to a table one can add/remove rows, columns, cells etc.
Drag images/text from one cell to another.
Selecting cells adding a background color. Or as in many shortcodes a background box with a defined CSS class.
    Borders
rounded corners to cells (and/or images).
    etc.

All visible inside the content creation area inside the semi transparent table grid.

There should be a discussion for WP 3.7 on how to improve the content creation area of WP. I bet a lot of people have a lot to say about this area of WP. An improved Ideas forum. That look better then the ideas forum today. Where it is easier to share and read ideas/features/suggestions.

This is exactly what at least 70% of the users want!!
Column-Layouts that work (in tinymce) like tables.

You could start with 4,3 and 2 columns and offer an extra css as a download to make the columns work in frontend.

I have created a few mockups in Photoshop that I added to this post:

    https://easywebdesigntutorials.com/wordpress/wordpress-mockups/

    (Text from the post)
The following are User Interface mockups for WordPress or any other CMS for that matter that can use a similar approach. I use a template driven, drag and drop, what you see is what you get approach to all elements of a page. Even though this is shown as part of the backend. It could instead be added directly to the frontend. These are ideas – features to be shared far and wide and is an approach that I would like to see implemented. Wix.com uses a kinda similar approach but is a lot more basic then what I suggest.

Thanks Ozz! I look forward to seeing how CEUX (Content Editing User Experience) develops!

CEUX is on temporary freeze as their has not been enough developers to help out with the project.

This means we should look for alternatives to help out with content creation.
