• I moved some sites from MediaTemple to Westhost. I have since had problems with all sites, but especially https://www.thebitterpen.com. Some, but not all of the problems, have been resolved. Here’s what’s left:

    – Can no longer see admin pages, which is the problem I started with, sort of fixed, then lost again (which I’ll explain below)

    – Can view the site on Chrome and Opera on my Mac, but not Firefox.

    Here’s what I’ve done:

    – A bunch of small things I found on these support pages

    – Reinstalled an older version of WordPress through FTP; this helped some with the admin pages, but still had access problems on Chrome

    – Installed the new version manually and had a lot working, had access success on everything (Yes!) until I logged out of Firefox and Chrome and discovered I could not get back in; I then decided not to log out of Opera

    – Reinstalled the new version of WordPress through the admin page on Opera and completely lost the site on Firefox, can see it on Chrome, but have no admin access, and I’m still not logging out of Opera

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

    Thanks for taking the time.

    Brian

  • Which version of WordPress were you using? Do you have backups, especially your database backup?

Yes, I have backups of all files and the database.

Because you face many issues, I suggest the following:
    1. Instead of troubleshooting on a live site, use a local installation (WAMP, Instant WordPress, or your favorite local setup)
    2. First install the latest version of WP, and use the minimum of plugins or none and the default theme.
    3. Import your database into the new installation. If it fails, you may reinstall the old version of WordPress and try. You may even need to try an extended upgrade.

After you get your site alright, start putting up your plugins, theme, etc. Once everything is found to your satisfaction, you can move to your live site. I suggest this because of multiple issues that you listed above. It takes time, trying different things, etc. There is no out-of-the-box solution.

    I hope you understand.

    Hi Krishna,

Thanks for the direction. The site’s back and running. I appreciate your help.

    Cool!
I am glad to note that you could solve the issues so fast, Brian.

The problem’s back. Something to do with plugins, I think. I’ll work on it again some other day. Or week.

    Thanks again.
