• I am thinking of using WordPress as the CMS and rootsweb as the hosting site for our Genealogy Society but would like to confirm that this is possible. Rootsweb doesn’t list CMS’s that would work but rather state the need for using freeware or shareware html editors. I have to assume a CMS is the same as an html editor but am getting messed up with the terminology. So….can anyone confirm that WordPress will work with rootsweb hosting? Thanks for your help!

  • You’ll need to check with them – this page describes the requirements for using WP:

Thanks for your response. Rootsweb only uses the term “html editor” and asking them isn’t providing clarification. I’m wondering if they aren’t familiar with Word Press or CMS?? Not sure where to go and what to do now.

If they are not answering you, that’s not a good sign. I’d suggest you using a host that actively supports WordPress – you will likely have far fewer problems.

I just looked at rootsweb and it’s not a regular web hosting service – I doubt you can install anything of your own. I think you will have to chose to use their network or WordPress.

It looks like you can host a site elsewhere and still register it on their site – so it would be found on their index, etc. – so that might be what you want to do if you want to use WP.

They responded again and directed me to a forum. I’ve asked there and hope to find something out. The thing about rootsweb is it’s the premier hosting for genealogy and the first thing that pops up when a search is performed. It realy is the GO TO for genealogy info. I will post again when I hear their answer in case others have this question.

Your last response popped in while I was typing. Very good info!!! Can you tell me where you found this?

I can certainly see why you’d want to be “related” to their site/network for geneology sites, etc. Ancestry.com is definitely the biggest source of info, etc.
