viewing a theme without it being my selected theme.

hey, i was just wondering if there’s a way for me to view a theme live in my browser, without selecting it as my ‘main’ theme.
i like to be able to work on a theme and check the progress of my work live in a browser… but i don’t want to set it as my main theme so that visitors to my site can see what i’m working on. i’d like to be able to work and view it “in the background” basically.
i tried going to https://action.nu/wp/wp-content/themes/”theme name” here but i get “Fatal error: Call to undefined function: get_header() in /home/action/public_html/wp/wp-content/themes/shwa/index.php on line 1” as an error… so i’m guessing i can’t view it that way.
i hope i’ve explained myself so that you can understand what i want to to… does anyone have any ideas for me? thanks in advance!
