Working WP 1.0.1 Installer

  • Last night, I discovered WordPress. I installed it fine after doing all of the manual operations, but were those really necessary? I didn’t think so, so I took it upon myself to fix the installation. All of the so-called “required” error messages have been alleviated. With my modifications, one should be able to follow the directions in the readme and install without a hitch (I can’t guarantee that, but we can hope, right?)
    Download the official 1.0.1 release, replace the appropriate files with mine, and follow the readme as you would normally (all instructions are the same.)
    Download the fixed files.
    For the paranoid, you can also Download the patches and apply them yourself.
    I hope this doesn’t irritate the developers, I’m only trying to help the end-users with some of their problems.
    If you have any issues with this package, be sure to post about them here so I can do my best to fix them.

  • Providing a helpful fix for installation of the Word Press program is a good idea.
    No offense intended to Spacemonkey, but can anyone here vouch for the security of this zipfile from a first time poster offering downloads from a brand new site?

    It’s alright. I understand that people could change the code to completely wipe a web server and post it as a fix ??
    Not a problem at all, I just wish someone would verify the package so people could stop worrying!

    you’ve put every WP file in the zip and it would take to long to go through them all. Why distribute all the files instead of just the ones you wanted had to change?

    I guess because it’s aimed at people installing for the first time? And it’s easier for them to download one zip than download a zip and the patches separately. But I agree, redistributing the entire package is not a good idea.
    What’s unclear is whether this is a hack or a bug fix. Bug fixes should really be emailed direct to the devs, but hacks have conventionally been posted here or on the Wiki. Since it is possible to install 1.01 as it currently stands, it was reasonable to consider this a hack and post it in public.

    I didn’t submit it as a bug fix because the installation of the nightlies is five times more buggy than the 1.0.1 release. I have plans to go through the latest nightly and fix the installation as well, but I first wanted to give the general public an error-free installation of a stable release. The bugs I fixed were very minor (forgetting spaces, trying to enter the same data into the database twice.) I assume these weren’t fixed yet because of the new features being implemented for 1.1, which could break the install. It’s better to fix the installation after all of the features are ready than trying to fix it every time a new feature is added, so don’t think I’m attacking the devs here. I think they’re doing a great job!
    WordPress is a wonderful application, I’m simply trying to help. In this spirit, I have taken your advice and deleted all unchanged files from the package. Users will now have to download the official 1.0.1 release and replace the files. I agree with all of you, this is a better idea than distributing the whole package. I have no experience with group collaboration myself, so I’m sorry for the controversy. Thanks for the help, everyone!

    Unless I’m missing something, aren’t your patches un-patches? They seem to want to back out your fixes, rather than put them in. (Though it is Monday, so maybe I just forgot how to use patch ;))

    THANK YOU, that’s all i can say. I downloaded wordpress a few minutes ago and it wasn’t working and this saved me the time of figuring out how to fix it :). Thanks again spacemonk.

    your fixes, fixed the install_config.php procedure for me
    however the install.php file still is bugged when using win/apache/mysql
    “SQL/DB Error:
    [Table ‘wordpress.wp_options’ doesn’t exist]
    SELECT option_name, option_value FROM wp_options”
    no tables are created. db exists and it connects to it.
    my guess is that the “wp-db.php” in the includes dir needs to be dixed, although I have not looked at the files per se. just thought i’d give wp a whirl. so far the whirl was a rather short one.
    fyi: there is absolutely nothing wrong with my server/sql setup. i run and test a lot of cms systems locally, how they install and test their usability. I’ll revisit “wp” once it provides a working install.
