• Last night, I posted a PDF file to my site (it’s within the body of the text), using the upload function from within the post page. I wasn’t really paying close attention, but in the options for the file, I can send it to a “page.” Which, was really kind of cool, when I thought about it.

The page you’re taken to is a dedicated page for the file, with the title of the page being the title that you specified when you uploaded the file. The content of the page is the information given while still uploading.

Now, I’ve tried to search the WP Codex, and the Support forums, but I don’t see anything anywhere about this functionality.

What I want to know is: How do I edit the page that’s created for the file? It doesn’t show up on the page list, and short of deleting and re-uploading the file, there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit the content. And, I’d like to be able to specify tags, and maybe a separate catagory for it, so the page will show up in searches for PDFs, or if someone wants to see an archive of all the files.

Did anyone else even know this happened? Does anyone have any idea how to go about getting what I want to do, done?

This feels sort of like getting a surprise present, but someone forgot the batteries.

Thanks so much for any help given.

No one? Am I imagining this entire page creation thing? This thing seems like it should have me documented in the Codex, but I don’t see it mentioned anywhere.

I don’t use the WP uploader so I’m just guessing here but 2.0 includes a new template file called ‘attachment.php’. I’m pretty sure that’s the file that’s used to display attached images, pdfs, audio, etc. If your theme doesn’t have that file then I believe it defaults back to single.php.

If that’s right you should be able to make a copy of single.php and rename it attachment.php. Then just mess around with that file and see if the changes show up when viewing your pdf page.

oh, you might want to make your links a little darker. I didn’t actually see the link to the .pdf, I had to search for it. ??

Sorry about the link color… I’ll work on it.

I’m sure that doing what you suggest would change the way the page LOOKS, but there is no way to edit the content. Comments made on the page are edit-able from within the admin screen, but the pages themselves are no where to be found within the page structure. There is no way to edit content, edit catagory (and the page doesn’t inheret the parent post’s catagory) or edit anything else you can normally edit for a page.

Here is the link to the PDF page directly: https://unsympathetic.net/2006/02/21/and-if-you-want-these-kind-of-dreams-its-californiacation/california-possibility-and-dissapointment/
