How to display current date?

    I was looking through the template tags, and noticed that the date-related tags are all focussed on the posts themselves. I just want to plunk down the date itself on my site. I went looking through the PHP site and found some code which I posted here for people to look at.
    Is there already a tag that I missed? Is there an easier way than the code I posted? Note that I realise that it was designed to create a “posh” date, so it may be fancier than needed, but it works.
