get a toc in left or right nav

All the themes I’ve tried put the page names at the top – I want a regular toc, there are quite a few pages and I need the navigation.

Can anybody help point me in the right direction? I’ve added menus but never see them, don’t think they’re what I think of as menus.

I’m quite html-savvy, but finding wordpress painful
