    thanks benz

I downloaded the whole public_html folder with all the wordpress content via ftp from the old domain and I downloaded the .sql via cpanel.

Then I uploaded the public_html folder to the new domain via ftp. Created a new database and edited the config file to suit, edited the urls in the .sql, uploaded the config file. and finally imported the .sql file into my new database.

The theme is working, all my text and posts are there. The things missing are most of the home page, images and the footer. Looks like a theme/plugin issue.

Would using one of the backup/transfer wordpress plugins be a better way of transferring instead of just copying everything via FTP?

    Thanks heaps

Yes, use a free plugin called duplicator, it works like a charm.
