• I’m helping some friends of mine clean up their website – they use WordPress 3.5. They make jeans and so a lot of the content is photos of their products, we’ve found the Gallery feature makes it easy to post a bunch of photos at once and have WordPress do most of the formatting.

The issue I’m having is that I prefer the look of square thumbnails for the gallery rather than keeping the aspect ratio of the picture when displaying it as a thumbnail. In Settings>Media I have thumbnail size set to 150×150 pixels with “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” CHECKED. I assume this is the feature I need, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. If I uncheck this box and regenerate my thumbnails, nothing. If I check this box and regenerate my thumbnails, nothing. I’ve tried adding size=”thumbnail” to my [gallery] shortcode, even though thumbnail is supposed to be default… nothing.

It appears that WordPress doesn’t actually create any thumbnail files and is simply resizing the full-resolution images when displaying them at thumbnail size. You can see this happening here:

On a page like this with many posts, many galleries and many images, the site is VERY slow to load all of these images at full-resolution. Why doesn’t WordPress generate thumbnails? Why can’t I get them to be square? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
