• Is there a plugin or other way that I can have users log in with their email address and password rather than their nickname, yet have their nickname appear in posts and comments?

I have a blog with some categories restricted to family and close friends. I have family members reading a blog who have a hard time remembering and managing a variety of usernames and passwords on different sites, but who know their email address by heart. It would be easier on them if the login process prompted them for an email address rather than a username. I would make their username the same as their email address, other than the potential for spam harvesters picking it up.

While using email/password to login was my first thought, I’m open to other solutions. Thanks for any ideas.

  • I’m not sure you could do this without editing some core files to call a different table from the database. I’m sure if you found the right part it wouldn’t take much changing, I’ll have a look for you myself.

I had a look, I’m not too sure but you have $user_login and $user_email – you’d, basically, need to change one for the other so it looks for email rather than login but you want to wait for others to tell you exactly where to look and what else to edit.
