• Hello,

Not using WP yet, but will be very soon. A friend is a web developer, and she has agreed to help me get everything set up (e.g. hosting) as long as I do all the editing myself. I’ve been reading and researching about WP and it looks like a great fit for my needs. However, I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my laptop. I’ve found lots about Ubuntu and WP and it looks like they work well together. As I read, I find a TON of directions telling me to download LAMP stuff to set up my server. In my case, I am not acting as my own server – it will be done by the company my friend operates. So, I’m writing to ask: what do I need to download to my personal laptop so that I can use WP?

Please spell out the acronyms as I’m learning!

    Thank you,

    Jim

Nothing. WP is entirely web based.

But, a good ftp program. A folder with backups of all your images/graphics would be good too. I keep a backup of the entire site on my computer as well as in the cloud.

So I don’t need ANYTHING on my laptop? Run it straight from the cloud? But backup my stuff.

Okay, not the answer I was expecting, but I like it!

    Thank you,

    Jim

You will run it from a browser. The install program takes care of setting up the database, etc. You will have to setup your wp-config.php. All the files and database will be at the host where you will need to be able to sign in and use control panel from time to time.
