• Yesterday, 1/4/13, I added content (for about 8 hours) to a page. I updated and previewed my progress, multiple times. I went to preview one last time and received a “WordPress Failure” notice. I saved my page and turned off the program. Today, all the data that I entered on 1/4/13 is gone. What happened? Can I retrieve the work? Didn’t even have a chance to backup. HELP! Thanks.

  • What’s the site URL? WordPress will autosave posts and pages, even drafts, so the content will be in the database.

I saved my page and turned off the program….

Saved where? In the WordPress editor? And what “program” did you turn off? One on your own PC?

Hi Songdog, So, I’m a bit of an idiot in this area so, please bear with me. Do you want the URL for the page where my data was lost (i.e. – WP editor)? Or just my website URL? I was in the WordPress editor, editing a page. I used the wrong term – meant to say, “updated” not “saved” and “turned off” meant “closed my site” or went off line. I also have the Google history page if you’d like to see that as well as a screen shot. Thanks so much. Nancy

Yes, what’s the full site URL? And the missing page URL.

Look at the bottom of the lost data page in the editor and see if revisions are listed.

If you don’t see ‘revisions’ on your post/page editor you can enable this to be displayed via the ‘screen options’ pull-down in the top right corner just under the ‘Howdy’ welcome text – people sometimes miss that

nancylthamilton.com and https://www.nancylthamilton.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=2206&action=edit. Yes, revisions are listed but none for yesterday. I also received an error message yesterday, “You do not have permission to preview drafts”. Thanks.

Sounds like your webhost’s database server blinked out for a minute and lost the draft. The “You do not have permission to preview drafts” error is a permissions error, either file permissions or logged in editing permissions. Who is the webhost? webfaction.com?

You view the last revision; maybe that has the changes you lost.

Uh, need to wait for my son on that one. He set up my hosting (and my WP) for his neanderthal mother. Do I just go back to this post and comment, when I have the info? Is the host name necessary for WP to help solve this issue or should I be talking to whomever is hosting my site? Thanks you guys!

You can ask your host to try and recover the page, but it sounds like it wasn’t even saved in the database, so it’s gone for good.

I’d find another web host. Bluehost is the same price per month and much, much more reliable. Recommended WordPress Web Hosting.

You can come back here and comment when you know more and maybe we can figure out more.
