HiDPI images: handled in 3.5, or still need a plugin?

    Building a photoblog — is there a way to set WP 3.5 to a) generate the @2x images when I upload media, and b) detect the viewer’s screen resolution and serve the high-res or low-res images accordingly?

    Or should I just use a plugin like WP Retina 2x?

    I’m using WP 3.5 and the Catalyst Theme, Dynamik child theme. Not a coder, but I can follow clear instructions if I need to do something in the code.
