Are passwords time sensitive with wordpress?

I downloaded and installed wordpress yesterday and everything worked perfectly. Today I attempted to carry on from where I left off and now I can’t log in anymore, when requesting a new password the auto e-mailer doesn’t even recognise my email address. Have I lost the plot and overlooked something really simple or is this particularly strange? Thanks in advance for your help.
