The text color when I edit posts and pages has changed to white. White on a white background is difficult to work with. I believe this happened the last time I upgraded WordPress. It hasn’t been an intolerable problem with only me editing the site, but now other people will be working on the site as well. I can’t find where the text color for edit post and edit page is controlled.

I know I need to upgrade versions, but I’m afraid it will break the old theme that’s running on my site and I don’t have time right now to fix the theme if it does.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress 2.8.4. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

I deactivated the plug-ins a while ago and that didn’t fix it. I haven’t tried the other ideas, so will do that now. Thanks.

I tried switching to the Twenty Eleven theme and got a widget error. From there, I was unable to get to the site, even far enough in to change the theme. I FTPd in and deleted the Twenty Eleven folder, hoping WordPress would default to its own default theme, but all I’m getting now is a blank screen. Does anyone know where the name of the current theme for a WordPress site is, so I can go in and edit it? Btw, the site is at https://mediaarts.wesley.edu.

I put the Twenty Eleven folder back, hoping to be able to at least get to the admin screen. No luck. I was able to edit its function file to turn off the function that was hanging, which got me in (if anyone needs to know this in the future). I did try editing posts from a couple of different themes and I still have the white-on-white problem, so it’s not theme specific.

Twenty Eleven is the default theme in WordPress 3.4.2.

I saw that, but it didn’t work out of the box. Luckily, someone else had had the same problem and posted which lines to delete from the function file. Weird. I now have Twenty Eleven working, but even that gave me white text on a white background when I edit a post or page. I’m going to try the other solutions over winter break, when I have more time to fix the site if something I do breaks it.

Try adding define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false ); to the bottom of your wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line).

That had an interesting effect. Now when I edit the post, the text comes up black — then, as I sit there watching, it changes to white. I tried switching themes; same result. I did notice that I got a flash of the bar with buttons for bold, italics, etc. When the text goes to white, the bar disappears. I have no plugins that should be affecting the edit function, though I did at one time. Those have been turned off and deleted.

I decided to take a shot at an upgrade. Upgrading to the latest version seems to have cleaned up whatever was wrong. Luckily, my theme still works.
