A little while ago I got a message from my host the title of which was New User Registration. The body of the message was:

New user registration on your site Fifty 2 Ninety Online:
    Username: Jan84935734
    E-mail: [email protected]

I went and looked at my users. There should have only been 3: 2 for me and 1 for my consultant, but here, indeed was Jan84935734 as a subscriber. This seemed fishy to me because I don’t know how anyone could subscribe to be a user.

So I deleted the new user and I’m wondering 2 things: does that look as though I’ve been hacked, and what do I need to do about it?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello, Martin!

If fifty2ninetyonline.com is your site, it appears that you may have user registration turned on.

    fifty2ninetyonline.com/wp-login.php?action=register

That may explain it. While the register link doesn’t seem to appear on your front page, someone who knew what to look for accessed the registration page.

Check your general settings and see if the “Membership: Anyone can register” box is checked

    Hi, Clayton:

Yes, fifty2ninetyonline.com is my site. And you were right, I did have user registration turned on. Following your instructions I unchecked “Anyone can register.”

I knew that I didn’t have a register link on any of the pages, but had no idea that one could simply put in the URL you showed. Wow, a lot to learn.

I really appreciate the help. Thanks so much.

You’re quite welcome. That’s a very easy thing to overlook if you remove the meta widget from the front page. The “register” link in the meta forwards to the registration page, but removing the link itself doesn’t actually turn off registration.

Thanks again, Clayton, I appreciate the help and the information.
