• I know there are lots of tools for split testing (a/b testing). They generally rely on creating multiple versions of a page which are shown to random visitors, and they track what percentage of each variation leads the user to a conversion page (or to click on an event-tracked button).

I’m interested in a bit different problem. I’d like to split test the name I display for one of my top level menu items – variations might be “Shop”, “Things I Love”, “Recommendations”, etc. That menu item is on every page, so there is no reasonable way to split test it by creating whole new copies of pages.

Clearly I could write some custom code to do this, but it seems like a common enough need that there should be a plugin for it. Or if not, has anyone got any code they would like to share?

I ended up using Visual Website Optimizer – it is great at stuff like this. Unfortunately, I used up my free trial very quickly, and not sure I can bring myself to spend the big bucks on it yet, but it is an awesome tool.
