• Hi folks,

I’m just upgrading my test site to WP2.0 to see the difference, and it’s reminded me of a question I meant to ask ages ago but somehow forgot:)

I’ve got a permalink structure at present which was the basic one that I started with 1 year ago on my site (e.g. numeric: https://www.sample.com/index.php/archives/999)

I’d love to change that to be more meaningful, and contain possible the post name as its reference, but if I do that now, will all the links I’ve used in posts for the past year (which refer to other posts on the same site) still work or will they screw up?

I guess what I’m asking is…am I stuck with the permalink structure I initialised the site with, or if I change it will my existing links to old articles (which use the format above) still work ? Thanks in advance.

  • If those links in the old articles where hardcoded containing the old permalinks structure URIs… no, they will not work if you are going to use a new structure.

    Permalinks are – a problem….

Here’s what you do: you change the structure to what you want it to be, and if it works, you have a glass of whatever’s your favorite libation to celebrate.

If it doesn’t work, you dance the cursing coyote dance, pray you have a database backup, and set the permalinks back to where they were before you mistakenly assumed that the program was solid so your new-fangled permalinks would work with no hinks.

In other words, before you do one livin’ thing, MAKE A FEW BACKUPS – the database, your theme files…. whatever you think a not-so-perfect program might screw up beyond recovery….

Once again vkaryl summarizes the state of WordPress 2.0 with a succint summary of permalinks ??

I think permalinks with WP 2.0 has become harder than with 1.5.x.

It appears to me we are likely to see a series of patch releases like 1.5 codeline, following the premature birth of 2.0.

I tried this with my recently upgraded test site and of course the links didn’t work once I’d changed them.

So – given that I’ve over a year of blog entries (or close enought at this point) using a ‘current’ permalink structure, am I to infer from the posts above that I’m now stuck with this one, and that the only way to change the permalink structure going forward whilst retaining compatibility to old posts is to manually go back through each one – which would of course be a nightmare!!

That the case? Or is there some other trick I can try?

I *think* if it were me in your position, I would just wait a bit, make no sudden moves or decisions, just to see if maybe the dev team comes up with something eventually….

I am having the same problem. Had to retore my backups ;).
    Thank god i made backups.
