Page load speed

We’ve launched our wordpress site but are experiencing serious page load time issues.
The number of sql queries is way too much. and we cant figure out whether they came with the themeand are needed for the theme to work. or are they generated from our end through the plugins we have used.
this is our current set up: site is hosted on a vps server. and the domain is at godaddy. could this setup be an issue..?
